Queen Latifah
Dana Elaine Owens also known as Queen Latifah, is an American rapper singer. in film, music and on television, Queen Latifah has received 2 Screen Actors Guild Awards (two Image Awards), a Grammy Award as well as six more Grammy nods and nominations for an Emmy Award. Queen Latifah's parents are Lancelot and Rita Owens, both Police officers. Rita was a Newark New Jersey teacher, who worked in Irvington High School. The couple separated at the time Latifah was ten years old. Latifah grew up within the Baptist faith and attended Catholic school in Newark New Jersey. Her stage name Latifah meaning delicate and very kind in Arabic was bestowed by her aunt when she was eight. Latifah was 5-foot-10" tall forward on the team at her high school, was always a tall girl. She performed the hit song"Home" from The Wiz at a school play. Latifah started to beatbox for the rap group Ladies Fresh. Latifah was part of Flavor Unit - a group of rappers who united around the producer DJ Mark the 45 King. Mark James (aka DJ Mark the 45King) recorded a demo for Queen Latifah rapper Princess of the Posse. The recording was given to host Yo! MTV Raps is Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music signed Latifah following her hearing of the song. She released her first single, Wrath of My Madness, in the year 1988.
